Why Buy LED's?
LEDs offer many benefits over traditional lighting technologies. Here are just a few reasons you should consider changing to LED...
1. LEDs are more efficient
Filament based light bulbs, such as halogen and incandescent, convert up to 90 per cent of the energy they use into heat, with only 10 per cent being converted into light. In contrast, an LED bulb converts about 90 per cent of the energy it uses into light, and wastes very little as heat. This makes LED bulb far more cost effective to use.
2. LEDs last longer
LEDs last many times longer than traditional light bulbs. The life expectancy of a typical LED bulb is about 50,000 hours. Compare this with the 1,000 hours offered by a halogen and a CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) which lasts 5,000 hours.
3. LED bulbs generate less heat
LEDs produce less heat than halogen bulbs. This doesn't mean they don't get hot at all, but they are certainly much cooler than halogens. The reason for this has already been explained in point 1; LEDs convert less energy into heat. This makes them safer to handle and use, and reduces the risk of fire.
4. LEDs are available in a wider range of colours
Due to the way they emit light (a process called electroluminesence), LEDs are able to replicate a much wider portion of the visible, and the invisible, light spectrum. That means they are readily available in a much wider range of colours. Take our RGB LED Tape and colour changing GU10 LED Bulbs for example. LEDs are also available in cool white, as well as warm white (traditional halogen colour), offering further options to the user.
5. LED bulbs are very durable
LEDs belong to a type of lighting called solid state lighting, or SSL for short. This means they have no moving parts, fragile components or glass tubes. Ultimately, this makes them much more durable and reduces the liklihood of accidental damage. Unlike other types of lighting, LEDs do not "burn out" abruptly, but fade over time, which means you don't need to worry about them popping either.
6. LEDs are environmentally friendly
As LED bulbs use less energy, the reduce your carbon footprint. However, their environmental benefits do not end just there. Unlike CFLs, LEDs contain no harmful chemicals. This makes them safer to use and easy to dispose of, and completely eliminates the risk of environmental damage in the case of breakage.
7. LEDs are versatile
LEDs have come a long way over the past few years and are now available in many different formats. To find out exactly what LEDs can do, take a look at our range of flexible LED Strip Lights.
